MED-FACTS
Asking questions is a good way of learning. Isn’t it? It increases your knowledge and you definitely ought to learn something new.
Operated a patient for recurring bartholins abscess by complete excision of cyst wall.
It is pea sized alveolar glands on either sides of the vagina lubricating it. Blockage of the glands lead to formation of cyst and infection can lead to abscess formation which can be treated by antibiotics, drainage of abscess, marsupilization or cyst wall removal. Bartholins gland carcinoma is seen rarely in <1% of vulval cancers.
But the question I had this time was who is BARTHOLINS?
The gentleman’s full name is CASPER BARTHOLIN. He was a Danish anatomist who first described the bartholins gland in the 17th century. He studied medicine from the age of 16 in 1671 in Netherlands, France and Italy. Some sources mistakenly ascribe his discovery to his grandfather Casper bartholin the elder. The Bartholin family has great contributions as mathematicians, scientists and physicians
Medicine is an always evolving subject. There’s so much more to explore and learn. And thanks to all the great people who have taught us so much and passed it down for the generations to come. ????????

Often in my practice I’ve come across that it gets difficult for the patient to understand an early pregnancy complication called MOLAR PREGNANCY. To simplify here it goes- Molar pregnancy is when there’s a problem with the fertilised egg which means the baby and placenta does not develop the way they should after conception. It happens by chance and is very rare. Recently I had two of my patients, in fact both were best of friends and who were diagnosed with molar pregnancy. Initial symptoms of spotting per vaginum a differential of molar pregnancy should always be kept in mind. On investigations- b-hcg (pregnancy hormone) was more than 100,000 and typical snow storm appearance on USG. Managed them by suction evacuation of the products of conception under general anaesthesia. On examining the gross morphology of the tissues typical grape like vesicles were seen. And a confirmed diagnosis of partial molar pregnancy on histopathology. Followed them with weekly b-hcg and so happy that both of them are doing good. Received a lovely note of thanks from them not only for managing this early pregnancy complication but also educating them in simple words.
